Zone of the Enders 2 is a third person action mech game developed by Konami. It is noted for it’s fast and fluid controls.
Real-Time Control:
Zone of the Enders 2 has a very fluid and responsive control system. Your mech fires immediately once the attack button is pressed (or swings its sword in close range). Switching through weapons occurs immediately and the player can use these weapons immediately after switching to them. Throughout the game, most of the combat takes place in the air or space. When the players presses the “X” button the player will descend and if the player presses the triangle button the player will ascend. Both of these actions occur instantly. All secondary weapons can be used or put away immediately. It is apparently from first starting the game that it has real-time control.
Spatial Simulation:
The game has basic spatial simulation. The player can run into objects and enemies in the game. The player can open doors, blow up some objects in the environment, and even pick up metal beams in the environment and throw them at other enemies. Enemies themselves can be thrown into other enemies or walls. However, most of the game takes place in the air and space and object placement are often not noticed.
Polish:
This game is highly polished and there are many tiny details to be noticed. For example, the player’s mech has a subtle pulse of light that starts at the mech’s head and goes down to its feet. This pulse changes color depending on the health of the player. This effect is also found on the mechs of bosses. If the mech lands on the ground and moves around it’ll “skate” and leave behind skid marks and sparks. There are “cloud” effects from billowing snow. One of the most powerful weapons in the game, the Vector Cannon, requires that the player land on the ground so that support hooks can dig into the ground to prevent the mech from moving. During moments that are meant to progress the story, the game will shift into a first person mode in which the player can look around, zoom in and out, and even move the windows that show which characters are speaking.
Zone of the Enders 2 has solid game feel with consistent real-time control, spatial simulations, and lots of polish.
