Spatial AR Based Interactive Storytelling

Abstract

AR based app to encourage social interactions using stories. Instead of just listening to the history of every place, we think it might be more interesting if the user is able to add his own experiences and memories at the location itself. These can be in the form of photos, audios etc. People can basically create circles and share stories with others in their circle. Stories will be narrated by someone at a specific geolocation. All other people that have him in their circle will be able to hear his story when they are at the geolocation where the story was recorded.  They will be also be able to view the images on the AR view of their phone that supplement the story. This application is aimed at people who are willing to share stories with their friends. They can use this application whenever they are traveling to work, school etc.

Project details:

  • To create an AR application for interactive story sharing amongst your friends using user’s geolocation.

  • These stories can be a part of persons life story or narration of some incident that occurred at that location or sharing of owns knowledge about a location.

  • The content will be registered at specific geolocations. When the user is around that location there will be visual cues to notify the user about the presence of a message and / or image left behind by a friend who was previously at that location. The user can then opt to play the story and view associated graphics.

  • Associating a story with a geolocation is a interesting way of communicating when traveling. Also geo-marking the stories won’t be a problem as most people will have a friend circle in the same location area.

  • Logic behind making these stories restricted to a circle is to enable people to share freely personal experiences.

  • Conceptually its like tagging friends at certain locations and leaving behind an audio message or an image for them to view.

  • This will create a kind of social networking experience using rich media and storytelling.

Tasks accomplished:

  • Rendering graphics at specific geolocation.

  • Allowing users to upload images taken at a particular location or from the phone gallery and storing it on the server.

  • Playing audio in Argon.

  • Computing the distance of users phone from the Geolocation where the object is spatially stored.
  • Created a demo which plays audio and renders image only at specific geolocation.

Individual Contributions:

  • Samrat Ambadekar – Wrote code to render graphics at specific geolocation.

  • Varun Thakkar – Wrote code to play audio in Argon.

  • Mohini Thakkar – Wrote code to allow users to upload images and stored the images on the server. Integrated the image and audio code for the demo.

Future Plan:

Week Goals
March 17 – March 23 Uploading audio to the server. Storing the audio and image files on a server database as well as the user and geolocation.
March 24 – March 30 Designing the User interface. Allowing users to create their profile and join a friend circle.
March 31 – April 6 Progress Report 2 Implementing restrictions such that users can only see stories that have been left behind by their friends. Alerting users when they enter areas in which their friends have left stories.
April 7 – April 13 Implementing the map functionality where the user can see various locations on which his/her friends have left stories.
April 14 – April 20 Testing it for robustness
April 22 Final Presentation
