Project Report 2: smARtcar

Overview: This time our focus was getting information about interesting places on the route the user is currently taking and displaying this information in Argon. We managed to get some interesting locations around the current location by using the geoNames API. We created virtual billboards of information and positioned them around the buildings or landmarks they correspond to. Here is a snapshot of the current progress of the application.

The route navigation shown in the previous report is still functional but not shown in the snapshot for clarity. For each step of the route, several places of interest are retrieved from the Geonames API. Here is a n example of 10 places of interest in a radius of 10 km. The useful information is the name of each place, a Wikipedia link, its position and a summary.

Individual Contributions:

Gaetan and I worked together to find good APIs and getting that data into Argon. I handled the displaying of the billboards inside of Argon. This document was developed collaboratively over the web.

Future Work:

We currently have enough information to keep the casual user entertained from time to time on long road trips. However, for short commutes in a city, this information may not be very useful and could become repetitive. Our next focus is getting more relevant information like say coffee shops, restaurants, malls, etc and display that. Also a lot of work is still required on the GUI side. Most of the GUI right now is mostly a proof-of-concept kind of GUI rather than a very neat and clean interface. We also need to identify and use ways for the user to communicate specific information with our app.
