Pop Through Button Devices for VE Navigation and Interaction

This paper exposes a solution to modify the interaction, facilitate the navigation in Virtual environment thanks to pop through button devices which can triggered a set of different interaction modes.

This technology compare to traditional buttons provides:

-much activation states are available in the same physical surface area.

-less additional physical activity is required to activate the additional state.

-It is more natural to use than several buttons.

The authors developed 2 devices, the TriggerGun and the FingerSleeve.

The TriggerGun consists of  two pop through buttons that are embedded into a clay frame, one is triggered by the index fingers and the other by the thumb. The fingerSleeve consist of a devices attached on the index finger. Both of these devices allow a 6 DOF tracking.

4 techniques to use these devices are exposed. The zoomback techniques translate the user directly toward the target. The lasergrab allow the user to move relatively to an object contrary to the zoomback. The snapshot allow to take a pictures and to transported back to the scene were the pictures has been taken.

They finally test the fingerSleeve device in a cave painting. The small size and the ease to use the device make it very more efficient than traditional ones.
