Augmented Reality (AR) technology merges virtual content with the physical world. Mobile devices have advanced to the point that we can combine knowledge of where you are, what you are doing, and what you need to augment the physical world around you with virtual content for entertainment, education, information, and productivity
Consumer software is now hitting the market that allows you see simple informational displays overlaid on the live scene (e.g. Layar, Wikitude). These applications are just beginning to explore the capabilities of mobile AR.
At Georgia Tech we are leveraging advanced technologies such as 3D models of the environment, precise position/orientation tracking, and high speed wireless networks as well as novel application and interface design to develop the next generation of mobile AR software. We are currently developing an open architecture for creating and deploying these applications that will support businesses and users creating novel and exciting experiences. Our goal is to enable an ecology of mobile AR applications that allow users to personalize the world around them with information and content that is relevant and compelling to them and their social networks.
