Authoring 3D Mixed Reality Experiences: Managing the Relationship Between the Physical and Virtual Worlds

Abstract
The goal of our research is to understand and create software tools for Mixed Reality (MR) applications. History has shown that well-designed tools can have a dramatic impact on the quality and variety of applications that can be built for a particular interaction paradigm: the evolution and success of WIMP (windows, icons, menus and pointers) interfaces, and the desktop metaphor in particular, are a striking example of this. We believe that the lack of appropriate tools is one of the factors limiting research and deployment of MR systems, especially in domains such as entertainment that require skilled designers and artists to create robust, complex content.
